Montreal, Friday, August 1st, 2014 – “I feel rage and sadness in equal measure when I look at the victims of the Gaza war. I’m shocked. The USA have expended so much political energy on regime change in Syria. And here in Gaza? Nothing’s happening. It’s a scandal.”
With these words the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Fouad Twal, gave expression to his disappointment at western policy when talking to the international Catholic pastoral charity “Aid to the Church in Need” in Jerusalem on Wednesday. “Recently I was in the White House in Washington and spoke to people with responsibility there. It is my view that in this war in Gaza there can be no winners, only losers.”
Patriarch Twal was expressing his views during a visit to the Catholic St. Joseph’s Hospital in Jerusalem, where at present, 25 heavily injured victims of the war in Gaza are being treated.
All are Muslims except for a single Christian patient. “The Catholic Church in the Holy Land,” Twal continued, “is doing what it can to help those who are suffering. We do not distinguish in this between Muslims and Christians. All are suffering, and all need our help. This is our mission as a Church. But we cannot do this alone; we need help from outside. I call on the world to look at the situation in Gaza and not to forget the people there. They have nothing to do with this war, but they are paying the price for it.”
